Spanish and Portuguese Studies

  • Vecino a Neighbor provides the opportunity for Spanish speakers to converse in the language. The club also promotes volunteering for the Spanish-speaking community.

  • The Spanish and Portuguese Studies department sponsors a plethora of cultural events that incorporate foundational Spanish and Portuguese works. These events are most often held in the Ethnic Cultural Theater and are open to the public. Some recent events include a musical recital featuring Tomás Lozano’s interpretation of “The Modern Troubadour,” a series of readings, lectures and performances of “Don Quixote,” and “Historia de una muñeca abandonada” a Spanish play written by Alfonso Sastre.

  • The Spanish and Portuguese Studies department has a Service Learning Program in which approximately 18 students per year combine study with service to the community. Students volunteer in organizations that provide services primarily to Spanish speakers. Alternatively, they may volunteer in public schools as tutors of different academic themes. Some of the organizations and schools which collaborate with Service Learning are CASA Latina, the Mexican Consulate, El Centro de la Raza, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, Cascade People's Center, Center for Spanish Studies, John Stanford International School, Bryant Elementary School, John Hay Elementary School, Hamilton Middle School, Nathan Hale High School, Pipeline Project, East Side Literacy Program and others.
